February 2023, Seychelles
"I hadn't seen sea turtles laying on the beach for about ten days; unfortunately, the laying season is slowly ending. Then, on Valentine's Day, nature decided to give me a nice gift: right in front of my little house by the sea, a beautiful sea turtle appears. Needless to say, a big smile breaks out on my face.
But let's start from the beginning: where am I and what am I doing here?
I am Elisa and I am in a nature reserve in Seychelles doing environmental volunteer work. My role is to collect data on sea turtles. It's the opportunity I've been waiting for for a long time, my dream job, so when I found the ad on the Internet I didn't hesitate a second to send in my application and in just as short a time I packed my luggage.
Here nature is pristine, dense and wild. Modernity, chaos and hurry are far away. The only noise I hear is that of the waves that, incessantly, crash on the beach.
Here everything is in harmony and governs itself according to its own laws: the birds flying over the sea in search of food, the hungry sparrows waiting for their mothers, and the crabs spending hours building their shelter under the sand. Here the struggle for survival is a daily spectacle for which no ticket is necessary. But all this is also so much more: reflection, personal growth, awareness and more.
And then I think about how true a phrase I read in a book by G. Gotto is just when this adventure of mine began: 'The only journey you can regret is the one you never made.'"
